Hi Paul, I have just finished reading ‘Dodging Cows’, which my wife bought for me from Book Boutique. I really enjoyed it. Well done on writing something so wonderful and thank you!

Craig Thomassen – Inside Angling

Hi Paul, Okay – I now have withdrawal symptoms. Have spent the better part of the last week reading your book. Have experienced a multitude of emotions and reflections of a childhood long forgotten, a gradual realisation of the horrors my husband experienced in Angola . . . Loved the short chapters and the story of love, friendship, courage and endurance. Beautifully written. Well done. Can’t remember when last I was able to relate to a book on so many levels. Not sure if it was because it was a South African story or because of the heart-felt emotions. Hope you are working on a sequel.

I don’t even know how or where to start about your incredible book!!! I could NOT put it down, and not only that, but I kept having to go back and re-read sections of it, and when I finally got to the end, all I wanted to do was start all over again . . . I found your style of writing totally fascinating. From the brash brutal frank dialogue used for the army days to the evocative prose describing the land, country and life we all love so much and then the sensitive emotional ‘love’ scenes, it was all quite compelling. It made me laugh, it made me cry and it made me so sad to have in black and white the tragedies that so many, both black and white, have had to endure. One of the things that really appealed to me was that it was such a ‘believable’ story.

This review is from: Dodging Cows (Paperback)
This book brought back a lot of memories good ones as well as very sad ones of losing friends on the border. Good memories of growing up in a farmers comunity who looked out for one another black and white together. My best friend, a Zulu girl (Alsina) whom I last saw 40 years ago but still think of her often and praying that she’s ok and living a happy life.
Well done Paul Meade and God bless South Africa.

Excellent book. Well written. Captures your attention until the end. Excellent history on South Africa during the apartheid era and wars South Africa participated in. The main character reminds one of Sean Courtney from the Wilbur Smith books.
A recommended read.

An insightful snapshot of the challenges faced by individuals and communities living side by side, the struggles of integration, and chaos caused by those whose agendas are uncompromising, fearful, heartless and ruthless. Meekness alone is not enough.

I loved reading this book. I could not put it down. Its an incredible insight into life in rural South Africa. I reckon this book will give any Wilbur Smith or Bryce Courtney novel a run for its money.

I could taste and smell the realities of that time. This is a very real account of the complexities of our time in rural South Africa. Well done to the author.

  1. A very real story set in pre and post apartheid in rural south Africa. We could identify almost too well with some aspects of the book, found it difficult to put down and although it was a most enjoyable read, it was highly unsettling as a lot of the content was far too close to home and could be about a lot of people we know or ourselves.
Would definitely recommend to others and would read a sequel.
